WHO WATERS THE WILTING GIVING TREE ONCE THE LEAVES DRY UP AND FRUITS NO LONGER BEAR?

Richmond, VA’s $ilkMoney returns to announce his new album Who Waters the Wilting Giving Tree Once the Leaves Dry Up and the Fruits No Longer Bear?. His first solo material in three years, $ilk shares the album's lead banger NEVER TRUST A BITCH THA- *EXPLODES*.

The new single finds the enigmatic rapper returning to assert his place as one of the most technically proficient and unique voices in rap with his penchant for elongated song titles that read like riddles, his irreverent sense of humour and breakneck flows that he rattles off effortlessly. On NEVER TRUST A BITCH THA- *EXPLODES*, $ilk unpacks a relationship in turmoil that ends in an unpredictable betrayal. Produced by frequent collaborator Kahlil Blu the track is accompanied by a new music video directed by Micaiah Carter (Pharrell, Moses Sumney, Megan Thee Stallion).

Inspired by author Shel Silverstein's 1964 parable of generosity without the expectation of reciprocity, $ilkMoney's new album explores that concept as only he could. Across 15 tracks, $ilk interrogates the Giving Tree motif in its relation to the music industry, through winding parables and metaphors of the life of an artist whose appreciation for his culture and craft doesn't diminish in the face of its consumerization. The album was co-produced by $ilk and frequent collaborator Kahlil Blu, with contributions from Mutant Academy producer Sycho Sid.

You can’t passively listen to $ilkmoney. His songs rip through speakers like alien chestbursters, announcing his arrival with blasts of noise or pavement-cracking bass. Then there’s the voice. $ilk raps with a growling sneer, stuffing syllables into every available space. He issues screeds about the cycles of history and Black radical thought in a commanding boom, raspy from a never-ending chain of baseball-bat-sized spliffs. Imagine Xzibit kicking down a door, pupils dilated from a hero’s dose of mushrooms, rapping about subliminal messaging in soda commercials, and you’ve got a decent grasp on the giddy intensity of a $ilkmoney album.”

Pitchfork 8/10
