U has been described as the artist’s artist. Working as an archivist, collagist and chronicler through careful sonic curation, his output genuinely defies categorisation. Slotting into the broad genre classifications of techno, experimental electronic, ambient and modern classical while never fully pledging allegiance to any. A great depth of research goes into each track, samples used relate to each other, creating a reference maze or cultural study, the overall layers amount to something more than just music.

Previously releasing on imprints such as George Fitzgerald’s ManMakeMusic, Where To Now?, Erol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound, Technicolour and Lex Records, his work has been lauded for its “limitless possibilities”.

U invariably drifts towards his current musical, historical, anthropological and artistic obsessions, the intersections of different cultural influences and at times personal observation. These inclinations have transported him to the grand orchestras of 18th century Vienna, sordid warehouse raves, the breakup of the giant, unified landmass that would become Europe, a remote corner of England, uprising and social unrest in Thatcherite Britain and further back still to the primordial sludge that strained towards the sun’s warmth and leaned into the light of the future.
